It also does so quicker in some people than others. Although we see it happen more in men, women can just be as affected. Don’t worry, though, because hair loss is something that can be treated and if you’re ahead of it, it can even be prevented.now a very attainable goal.
Introduction
Hair is an important part of the human anatomy – it adds to our appearance and makes us look good, younger and healthy. The human hair is like the icing on the cake. However, there are times and seasons of life that cause hair loss, and if it is happening to you, you might be wondering why. That is why we would like to enumerate and inform you on some of the major causes of hair loss.
Hereditary
Our genes are a part of life, and it is something that we cannot escape. Hereditary hair loss, also known as patterned baldness, can begin as early as when you are in your 20’s. You are not alone if this is your story – statistics show that it is the most common cause of hair loss with 1 out of 4 individuals being predisposed to hereditary hair loss.
Physical Stress
If suddenly you find patches of bald spots on your scalp or you notice some hair in the shower, stop and evaluate your life and you will surely discover that you have been undergoing some stress in one form or another.
Physical stress, which can manifest after an accident, hectic lifestyle or a severe illness can influence hair loss, albeit temporarily. Don’t worry though, as soon as the source of the stress is identified and dealt with, your hair should grow back.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes to aid the growth of the fetus and in preparation for its arrival into the world. However, these changes have some obvious effects that the woman cannot escape.
It varies from person to person; for some, hair growth may become increased only for the hair to fall out after pregnancy, while others lose their hair. Don’t worry; your hair will be back to normal after some months when your hormones are back to normal.
Hormones
Other hormones apart from pregnancy hormones can cause hair loss. The thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland, which is found in the neck region. When there is an over secretion or under secretion of this, it creates an imbalance that can lead to hair loss issues.
Birth control pills used off and on can also affect the hormones and impact the loss of hair. Many other conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and menopause cause hormonal imbalance and can result in hair loss, as well.
Male Pattern Baldness
Similar to hereditary hair loss, but not quite; in this case, the patterned baldness is about genes and the male sex hormone called the androgen. It follows the pattern of losing hair on the crown or hair partings as it begins to thin out, while the hairline and temple area start to recede.
This condition is also called Androgenic Alopecia and can begin affecting males as early as their teens. The speed of baldness varies – for some men, it can take 10-25 years before they become completely bald and others become bald in 5 years. The growth cycle of each hair follicle ends, and there is no new hair growth, therefore, leading to baldness. It is the most common cause of hair loss among men.
Emotional Stress
Emotional or traumatic experiences, breakups, or loss of a loved ones cannot only break your heart and cause you pain, but it can make you lose your hair, too
It is known as a condition called Telogen Effluvium where the stress makes your hair go into a shedding mode, and you notice an increase in the shedding of hair, which is normally 50-100 hairs per day. Fortunately, it is a temporary cause for hair loss because as soon as you are back to a healthy emotional state, your mane will grow back.
Sudden Weight Loss
Losing weight is great because it might just save your life, but when it is done in an unhealthy way such as using a crash method or denying your body vital nutrients, then you may be in for hair loss, as well. The best thing to do to prevent hair loss as a result of sudden weight loss is to lose weight gradually and over time while taking in all the nutrients your body needs to function.
Aging
When we begin to age, some cells begin to die off, too. One of those cells is those found in the hair follicle. The hair begins to thin out, and then the strand does not grow back. This hair loss, as a result of aging begins as people enter their 50’s and 60’s.
Medication
There are side effects to most medications – some more severe than others and one of those side effects is hair loss. Cancer medications can induce hair loss as well as drugs used to treat heart problems, arthritis and birth control.
Not only that, but high blood pressure can also trigger hair loss, including some antidepressant drugs. High intake of Vitamin A can also be a culprit, so be careful of even the good stuff.
Conclusion
You don’t have to feel like you are the only one experiencing hair loss because everyone has gone through a phase of hair loss at one point or another. When you know the cause of your hair loss, the problem is half solved.
All you need is to get the appropriate solution. Most of the time, it is as simple as removing the cause, while other times, you may just need to use a temporary solution, such as a wig, hair growth powder, etc. until the hair grows back.
